Cubaris spec. 'Panda King' – The adorable tropical panda among isopods!
Do you dream of keeping the popular tropical genus Cubaris, but are you looking for a species that is not too complicated to care for? The Cubaris spec. 'Panda King' originates from the humid, tropical regions of Vietnam and is considered the absolute number 1 beginner species within this family in the isopod hobby!
Unique Panda Appearance & Fascinating Behavior
As the name suggests, these creatures, with their high-contrast color scheme, closely resemble small giant pandas. The dark shield is interrupted midway by a broad, creamy-white band. The antennae and legs are also completely bright white! When fully grown, they reach over 1 cm in size and surprisingly often show themselves on the substrate. Extra special: when they feel threatened, they roll up into a perfectly tight ball to protect their vulnerable belly.
Easy Breeding & Forgiving
While many other Cubaris species pose a challenge to reproduce, the 'Panda King' is a fast breeder that also readily forgives a small care mistake. Adult animals can regularly be admired on the surface, provided there are sufficient hiding places. To start a successful breeding colony, we recommend starting with a breeding group of at least 10 individuals.
Environmental Requirements & Care
Thanks to their tropical origin, 'Panda Kings' prefer relatively high humidity (75-85%) and a nicely moist substrate:
- Housing & Substrate: Use a rich substrate of humus/cocopeat mixed with decayed wood and plenty of withered beech and oak leaves. A thick layer of leaves and pieces of bark serves as both a hiding place and daily food.
- Climate & Moisture: Keep the temperature between 21 °C and 25 °C. Cover a large part of the substrate with (sphagnum) moss to retain moisture well, but leave one corner slightly drier.
- Nutrition & Calcium: Besides leaf litter and decayed breeding wood, they enjoy vegetables (such as cucumber or mushrooms), fish food, and special isopod food. A constant source of calcium (cuttlebone) is essential for the development of their sturdy shield.
Key Advantages at a Glance:
- Iconic Appearance: Beautiful black and white contrast with white legs and antennae.
- Best Beginner Cubaris: Easy to keep, very forgiving, and fast breeding.
- Flexible Ordering: Available individually with quantity discounts for larger numbers!
- Unique Defense: Can roll up completely into a ball when in danger.
