Leafcutter Ants (Atta & Acromyrmex) – The pinnacle of ant keeping

The Leafcutter Ant is the ultimate dream of every experienced ant keeper. These legendary ants are known worldwide for their spectacular behavior: they tirelessly cut pieces of leaves and transport them in long caravans to their nest. There, they do not use the leaves as direct food, but as a substrate to cultivate a unique, living fungus. Due to this complex care, this species is only suitable for the very experienced and professional ant keeper.

Why are leafcutter ants so legendary?

Keeping a leafcutter colony is an intensive but unparalleled experience:

  • Unique fungus culture: The ants live in complete symbiosis with a fungus. Managing the temperature and humidity of this fungus is the ultimate challenge for the keeper.
  • Unprecedented activity: The constant stream of ants carrying large pieces of leaves above their heads creates a living tableau in your setup.
  • Beautiful polymorphism: From tiny workers tending to the fungus to enormous soldiers effortlessly cutting through leaves with their jaws.

Collection only by appointment at our showroom

Because these colonies and their fungi are extremely delicate, leafcutter ants are not shipped. Our healthy starter colonies of, among others, Atta and Acromyrmex are exclusively available for pickup at our physical store and showroom in Apeldoorn. Upon collection, we will take ample time to go over the care with you, ensuring together a successful start for this biological masterpiece.

Ants are heroes!
