Buy a Praying Mantis: Discover these fascinating predatory insects

Ghost Mantis (Phyllocrania paradoxa) – The ultimate master of dead-leaf camouflage

Are you looking for an extraordinary praying mantis that looks like it was plucked straight from a forest floor? The Ghost Mantis (Phyllocrania paradoxa) is native to Madagascar and Africa. Thanks to the asymmetrical protrusion on its head, jagged contours, and dead-leaf colors, it blends in completely with fallen leaves and twigs!

Behavior: Calm 'sit-and-wait' hunter

Unlike active hunters, the Ghost Mantis is a patient ambush predator. Relying on its camouflage, it remains motionless until a flying insect passes by, then strikes with lightning speed using its powerful raptorial forelegs! They have a gentle and sometimes somewhat shy nature. When feeding with large tweezers, they might get startled; calmly waiting is the key to success.

Unique opportunity for group housing

What truly makes Phyllocrania paradoxa special in the mantis hobby is its minimal cannibalism. This is one of the very rare species that can be successfully kept in groups – provided there is always enough food present and the enclosure is spacious enough! A large terrarium full of branches and dead leaves with multiple specimens offers a breathtaking spectacle.

Care and Environmental Requirements

Ghost Mantises grow to about 5 cm long and thrive best at a temperature of approximately 26 °C (ranging between 20 °C and 30 °C, at least 18 °C at night). They require relatively high humidity (60% to 90%), which is easily achieved by lightly misting about 5 times a week. A terrarium of at least 20 x 20 x 30 cm offers ample space for perches and hiding places.

Feeding

In nature, they mainly eat flying insects such as curly-wing flies and house flies. Crickets (for example, size 6 or 7) are also readily eaten. Note: ensure no loose crickets remain in the enclosure when the mantis is molting, as the spider/mantis is very vulnerable then.

Key advantages at a glance:

• Unique Dead-Leaf Camouflage: Alien-like appearance with a 'twisted' head.
• Suitable for Group Housing: Very low risk of cannibalism with sufficient food.
• Calm Character: Easy and relaxing to observe.
• Ideal Beginner Species: Strong, easy-to-care-for mantis.
• Delivered in L3-L7 Stage: Good size for further rearing.

Product Specifications:

• Species: Phyllocrania paradoxa (Ghost Mantis)
• Size upon delivery: Stage L3 to L7
• Adult size: Approx. 5 cm
• Temperature: 20 °C - 30 °C (ideal daytime temperature 26 °C)

• Housing: Individually OR in a group (with sufficient space and food)

Giant Mantis (Hierodula sp.) – The active, large beginner species!

Do you want to start keeping praying mantises and are you looking for a robust, fierce hunter? The Giant Mantis (Hierodula sp.) is one of the largest mantis species successfully kept in captivity. Because they are not very picky and are easy to care for at room temperature, this is rightfully the most popular 'Giant Mantis' among enthusiasts.

Impressive appearance and color change

Hierodula mantises are known for their powerful build. They are usually bright light green in color, but beige, yellow, and brown variants also occur (which sometimes develop a pink hue in adulthood). What's special is that they can subtly adapt their color to the shades of their environment within a few days! Adult females become significantly larger and wider than males, who in turn are slimmer with slightly longer wings.

Fierce, active hunter

Unlike species that sit still for hours waiting, the Hierodula is a truly active hunter. As soon as it spots prey on the bottom of the terrarium, it turns its head with large eyes towards the insect and resolutely gives chase. A cricket or fly is snatched with lightning-fast raptorial arms in no time!

Care and Environmental Requirements

The Giant Mantis has few demands on its environment. A temperature of around 24 °C is ideal, but normal room temperature (at least 18 °C at night) is perfectly sufficient. The desired humidity is between 40% and 65%. Mist lightly every day or every other day with a plant sprayer to provide drinking water. Note: do not keep the enclosure continuously too wet, as excessive humidity is the number 1 cause of death.

Suitable Housing and Feeding

Because this is a large species, a terrarium of at least **20 x 20 x 35 cm** (L x W x H) is recommended for an adult specimen (at least 3x the length of the animal in height). Furnish the enclosure with many branches and artificial plants on which the mantis can hang upside down for a safe molt. Adult animals easily eat large crickets, cockroaches, and subadult locusts.

Key advantages at a glance:

• Impressive Size: One of the largest robust species in the hobby.
• The Perfect Beginner Species: Very strong, forgiving, and easy to care for.
• Active Hunting Behavior: Fiercely and dynamically hunts prey.
• Changeable Colors: Subtly adapts its shades to the environment.
• Delivered in L3-L6 Stage: Nice size to experience its growth up close.

Product specifications:

• Species: Hierodula sp. (Giant Mantis)
• Size upon delivery: Stage L3 to L6
• Ideal temperature: Approx. 24 °C (room temperature, min. 18 °C at night)
• Humidity: 40% - 65% (mist lightly every other day)
• Food: Crickets, flies, cockroaches, small locusts
• Housing: Keep individually (due to hunting instinct and risk of cannibalism)

Experience the magic of this large active hunter. Order the Giant Mantis (Hierodula sp.) today!

Non-Flying Fruit Flies – Essential proteins for your colony

Proteins are indispensable for the establishment and growth of an ant colony. While adult worker ants primarily use sugars for energy, the ant queen needs proteins to lay eggs, and larvae use these building blocks for growth. These **non-flying fruit flies** (20-50 pieces) form the perfect, bite-sized protein source for young and nascent ant colonies, and also make an excellent meal for small praying mantises, spiders, and poison dart frogs.

Easy to feed and store

Thanks to a natural mutation, these fruit flies cannot fly. This makes them very easy to offer to your colony with tweezers or directly from the test tube in the outworld, without having to worry about escapees.

Storage tip: Feed immediately or freeze

The flies are delivered in a convenient test tube and are intended to be fed immediately upon receipt. Do you want them to last longer? Then place the tube directly in the freezer! Frozen, the fruit flies will keep for several weeks. You can then thaw a few flies as needed, every day or few days, and offer them to your ants.

Tip for continuous breeding: This loose portion of fruit flies is intended as direct food. Since postal delivery can sometimes impact the vitality of the flies, we recommend ordering our special fruit fly breeding kit for a constant, fresh supply. This way, you can easily and affordably breed your own fresh flies at home!

Key benefits at a glance:

• Easy to handle: Cannot fly, so no escaping flies in the house.
• Essential nutrient source: Packed with proteins for rapid larval development.
• Convenient to store: Ideal for immediate freezing for later use.
• Bite-sized format: Perfectly adapted to the jaws of nascent ant colonies.

Suitable for feeding:

• Nascent and small ant colonies (such as Lasius, Formica, Tetramorium, Camponotus)
• Young praying mantises and small spiders
• Small amphibians and poison dart frogs

Product specifications:

• Quantity: Approx. 20 to 50 pieces
• Packaging: Transparent test tube
• Feature: Non-flying variant (Drosophila)

Ensure a healthy influx of new worker ants in your ant farm. Order these protein-rich fruit flies today!

Fruit Fly Breeding Kit – Always a fresh supply of protein at home

Proteins are indispensable for a fast-growing ant colony. With this **complete Fruit Fly Breeding Kit**, you can easily set up your own sustainable breeding program. This way, you'll never run out of liquid or live food!

Thousands of flightless flies in a few weeks

The included fruit flies are a special variant that cannot fly. This makes them extremely easy to feed to your ants or insects after breeding, without them flying around the room. Follow the included instructions precisely, and within a few weeks, you will have a constant population of thousands of fresh fruit flies.

The lid is equipped with a fine-mesh ventilation grid that ensures a constant supply of fresh air and helps prevent mold and moisture buildup. At the same time, the mesh openings are small enough to prevent fruit flies, small spiders, or praying mantis nymphs from escaping.
